Art
The art lead is Miss Roy.
"We learn about art to understand how we can express ourselves and encourage our creativity."
Intent
The teaching of Art at Kirk Smeaton CE Primary School allows and inspires all children to express their creativity. We also intend to teach the importance of recognising and developing the child’s skills emotionally, aesthetically, spiritually, intellectually and socially. This ensures children are able to appreciate art and critically discuss their individual thoughts on a piece of artwork and the intentions of the artist.
High quality art education equips children with the skills to explore, experiment, create and invent their own work of art whilst engaging, inspiring and challenging pupils.
Children will be able to identify how their skills set has progressed using a range of techniques and equipment and shaping their own artistic direction.
Implementation
The implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Kirk Smeaton Primary School is based on the National Curriculum to include the progressive skills set. The children are taught Art weekly as part of their termly topic work where all children experience creating a piece of art using a variety of techniques to ensure they can develop as an artist. These techniques are built upon and covered over the course of the years to ensure all children receive equal opportunities to experience a technique such as printmaking, sculptures, mosaics, batik and weaving.
The children's learning is further enhanced with enrichment activities by visits from artists, where the children have the opportunity for collaborative working and exploring the
different styles and techniques of a range of artists. Children also have the opportunity to display their artwork on the village post box, as well as displaying their artwork in a whole school gallery which parents are invited to.
Impact
The impact of learning art in primary school evokes creativity, subsequently impacting their feelings so they are able to articulate how a stimulus can promote this. This will also impact their self-expression to determine what type of artistic piece they want to create, identifying particular colours that reflect certain moods. The children will develop their cultural awareness of different pieces and be able to identify real-life pieces from different artists to put into context.
